Close to 2,000 athletes and athletic officials from different government universities and colleges throughout the Southern Philippines are expected to converge in Zamboanga City early next month for the annual friendship games of the Mindanao Association of State Colleges and Universities Foundation (MASCUF).
Dr. Grace J. Rebollos, president of the Western Mindanao State University, announced this during a meeting with Mayor Celso Lobregat and representatives of the different government agencies in City Hall yesterday morning in a bid to drum up support for the said sporting event. In response to Dr. Rebollos’ appeal for assistance from the local government, Mayor Lobregat immediately directed the city police and Task Force Zamboanga to provide the visiting athletic delegations and their billeting stations with ample security, including the JFE Memorial Sports Complex in Baliwasan where most of the games will be held. Likewise, Lobregat requested the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (Zamcelco) and the Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD) to ensure uninterrupted power and water services, respectively, at the sports complex and the schools where the out-of-town athletes will be billeted—WMSU, Zamboanga City Polytechnic College and Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology. Zamcelco assured to put on standby a mobile transformer at the vicinity of WMSU to cater the power need of the university and the grandstand in case power supply would trip off in that area. The ZCWD, on the other hand, will provide the billeting schools with additional water supply throughout the four-day games. Earlier on, Dr. Rebollos said MASCUF Games ‘09 was originally scheduled to kick off on January 26 but was moved to February 11-15, notwithstanding a directive from the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) to call off the sports activity due to financial concerns problems affecting some MASCUF member-institutions, subject to local conditions. Zamboanga City last played host to MASCUF Games in 2005 during which WMSU emerged overall winner with 89 gold medals, 53 silver and 20 bronze. Last year, the games were held in Bukidnon. The MASCUF-member institutions are: Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), Bukidnon State University (BSU), University of Southern Mindanao (USM), Zamboanga State College Marines Science & Technology (ZSCMST), Zamboanga Polytechnics State College (ZPSC), Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology (DOSCST), Sultan Kudarat Polytechnic State College (SKPSC), Central Mindanao University (CMU), Mindanao Polytechnic State College (MPSC), Jose P. Rizal State College(JPRSC), Camiguin State College (CSC), Mindanao State University (MSU), Misamis Oriental State College of Agriculture and Technology (MOSCAT), Cotabato Foundation College of Science and Technology (CFCST). — Vic Larato
