Provinces and cities throughout a troubled Mindanao are celebrating starting on Thursday the Week of Peace with various and diverse activities all intended to foster better relations among different ethnic groups and individuals. The opening will coincide with the Islamic celebration of Eid-il Fitr or Hariraya Puasa. In Zamboanga City, where the observance first started in 1997, a usual opening day parade will be held on Thursday, starting from the Zamboanga Central School-East and ending at the Joaquin Enriquez, Jr. Memorial Sports Center where a short opening program and an inter-school drum and lyre exhibition will be held.

The reported incident in Malagutay, Zamboanga City that caused damage to properties and endangered the lives of the residents around the military camp where a child was almost hit by a falling bullet slug coming from the training ground in the barangay is a serious matter that should have been acted with dispatch by the city government. The protection of life and property of the people is an executive responsibility and does not call for any resolution from the legislative branch before immediate action is taken.

If you missed reading my column the past few days this week, it’s simply because I had been very busy recycling my old decors, plus I’d also been busy buying new ones, to add to the old decors. The spirit of Christmas should always be imbedded in our minds, for the sake of the young children. In my case, as early as October, I started putting out my Christmas tree, and all the other decorations from the past years, from the cabinet, as it takes time to dust them, and fixing them, to look brand new again, before hanging them, or placing them on top of tables, and corners of the house. I do all these for the love of my family. I want my grandchildren to enjoy their Christmas Holiday stay with us, which is a once a year special occasion for us grandparents.

Retired Army Capt. Antonio F. Catimbang Sr. lived a vivid and impressive life. Although known for his gallantry and invincibility, he was also kind-hearted, one who never turned his back on those who seek his help.
