Mayor Celso Lobregat will spearhead the opening today of the observance National Science Club month, a celebration that promotes science clubbing as a means of increasing interest in and understanding of science and technology as well as stimulate scientific inquiry and critical thinking among young students.
The opening program, set at the Universidad de Zamboanga Summit Center in Tetuan, will start immediately after the Parada de Ciencia na Ciudad Latina 2010, a parade of all members of science clubs in all lementary and secondary schools in the city.
The celebration is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 28 declaring September as the National Science Club month.
Last night, officers and members of Science Club Advisers Association of the Philippines-Zamboanga chapter led by President Ruben Angeles had their fellowship and awards night at the Patio Palmeras with Mayor Lobregat also as guest speaker.
In his message during the fellowship, Mayor Lobregat urged science club advisers to promote academic freedom by giving students enough room to think of things that have not been fully explained scientifically and allowing students to investigate and discover answers on their own.
“We may give them advice and guidance should they need it, but as much as possible, leave them to ask questions, pursue the matter until they find the answers. I believe that is the best way to nurture scientific curiosity”, the mayor said.
The observance of National Science Club month is aimed to achieve the following: strengthen the implementation of various programs and projects in science and technology; Provide opportunities for science clubs nationwide to engage into productive, meaningful and effective activities that promote awareness, interest and involvement of the youth in science and technology and harness the knowledge, skills and values of science club leaders, teachers, coordinators and science enthusiasts to cope with and apply the developments and advancements in science and technology.
