The Government Service Insurance System or (GSIS), the Social Security System and the National Food Authority got the initial invites from the House Committee on Government Enterprises and Privatization.
The committee chaired by District 2 Rep. Erico Basilio “Erbie” A. Fabian, is tasked to review, scrutinize and evaluate the performances of all government owned and controlled corporations ( GOCCs) and recommend to the national government on whether to strengthen, merge, or abolish these entities.
These after President Aquino vowed to streamline a bloated government bureaucracy which entailed huge financial subsidies to operate.
The invites to the three prominent government corporations came after the committee membership empowered Fabian, its chairman to invite any and all of these government corporations even if no bills, resolutions or complaints are filed before it.
To recall, the GSIS and the SSS and the NFA were singled out as priority review candidates before the body following complaints and expose’ were made over their operations nationwide.
Fabian though said these hearings will allow Congress a true-picture assessment which could hopefully result in the proper recommendations they will make to help make these entities better to serve the public.
The 2nd district solon also invited the general public to come and attend the hearings where their complaints, observations and assessments will be welcomed on the floor during the open forum.
More GOCCs are being lined up for invitation before the House committee in the coming weeks, Fabian added.
