Liga ng mga Barangay president Councilor Abdurahman Nuño has urged the City Police Office to adopt security measures outside the different mosques here especially today as thousands of Islamic faithful will be going to the mosque for their prayer in celebration of Hariraya Edil Fitri.
During last Wednesday’s regular session of the City Council, Nuño sponsored a resolution calling on City Police Director Sr. Supt. Edwin De Ocampo to provide adequate security to local Muslims who will be praying in the different mosques in the city as early as 5a.m. today.
The resolution, addressed to De Ocampo through the Office of Mayor Celso L. Lobregat, also underscored the need for the local police to provide security and also help ensure the smooth flow of traffic outside mosques particularly today as the Islamic World celebrate the culmination of the 30-day fasting period or the holy month of Ramadan.
The councilor said that it is incumbent upon the local police authorities to also secure mosques especially during this important occasion for the Muslim residents in the same manner as they also provide security to Christian churches during Fiesta Pilar and Christmas.
He said that aside from providing security, the police can also ensure smooth flow of traffic outside the mosques.
President Noynoy Aquino had declared Hariraya Edil Fitri as a special non-working holiday to give the Muslim Filipinos a time to celebrate this very important religious festivity.
Hariraya Edil Fitri is a time when Muslims celebrate their triumph over the 30-day fasting period, renew their faith and commitment to Allah, a time to give Zakat or alms to the poor and needy, and a time to ask for forgiveness and to reconcile with adversaries.
