Vice President Jejomar C. Binay echoed here his proposal for the abolition of Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections to enable the country to save a lot of its resources.
Binay was interviewed by newsmen upon coming from Bucay, Abra where he graced the town’s annual fiesta and turned over 14 units of ambulance from the Makati City government.
Bucay is a sister town of Makati City under an agreement signed between the two Local Government Units when Binay was still Makati City mayor.
He said the abolition of the Barangay and SK elections would enable the government to save its money, which could be used for more significant projects that benefit the Filipino people.
“I am for the abolition of SK Elections, and not only that, even for Barangay Elections, because we can easily appoint barangay officials and do away with the expensive barangay elections," he said.
But he said there ought to be barangay chairman, yet but to be appointed by the city/municipal mayor.
By appointing barangay officials, the mayor can easily terminate a barangay official who does not perform,” Binay said.
However, Vice President Binay said that there should still have a youth representative in the municipal or city council.
At the same time, the Vice President recommended to all local government units (LGUs) in Abra to computerize their transactions if they want to increase their revenue collections.
Computerization of the LGUs, especially the offices of the assessor, the treasurer and the mayor, would eliminate corruption as there will soon be uniformity in the computation of taxes, he said. (PNA)
