ZAMBOANGA CITY — The long time challenged position of Jihan Edding is finally revoked and given to Mike Alavar. This, after the City of Board of Canvassers as directed by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) en banc that reconvened last Monday morning, March 28, 2011 nullified the proclamation of Al-Jihan R. Edding and declared Miguel "Mike" C. Alavar III as the rightful 8th member of the Sangguniang Panlunsod.
Al Jihan Edding and her lawyer filed a motion for the postponement of the meeting due to some technicalities but the CBOC as chaired by Atty. Roy Edisa denied the request stating that the procedure is in order and the mandated task as directed by the Comelec en banc is already executory.
It can be recalled that as early as November 11 last year, the Commission on Elections-Manila has declared Laban ng Demokratiking Pilipino's Miguel "Mike" Alavar as the 8th candidate to occupy the District II council seat and in the process admitting errors in the transmission of the statement of votes by precincts to the City Board of Canvassers (CBOC) during the May 10 automated elections but it is only now that the proclamation was reverted and officially announced locally.
The decision, promulgated by Comelec's First Division in Manila on November 11, 2010, came approximately 6 months after the May 10 elections when Alavar together with Roseller Natividad petitioned for the annulment of the proclamation and correction of errors in the election returns, canvassing of votes and tabulation against the board of election inspectors (BEI) of precincts 371 of Talon-talon and precinct 394 of Tetuan, the City Board of Canvassers and proclaimed Al-Jihan Edding as winner by 6 votes. However, the results in the corrected votes are as follows: 36,092 votes for Edding and 36,103 votes for Alavar making him leader by 11 votes.
