PAGADIAN CITY — The Department of Education (DepEd) through the Health and Nutrition Center (HNC) and the Adopt-A-School Program (ASP) Secretariat in coordination with the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) and Lamoiyan Corporation will conduct
"Happy Smiles for Healthy Kids" project.
The project aims to enhance the development of oral health habits, personal hygiene, dental health services and oral health education/promotion among school children. It will be implemented starting the school year 2011 – 2012.
A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between the DepED and PDA officials on January 30, 2011 in Manila, for the implementation of the project in 78 selected schools nationwide.
The project has four (4) components as follows: 1) daily tooth brushing and hand washing drills to emphasize the importance of proper hygiene among school children; 2) oral health services or the conduct of regular oral examination to target beneficiaries; 3) oral health education such as display of posters in classrooms, conduct of lectures/demo and dental fairs; and 4) oral health treatment and intervention.
The school health and nutrition personnel and ASP coordinator's in the selected schools are expected to take the lead in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the project. School Principals/Heads shall also take the lead in the implementation of the supervised daily tooth brushing and hand washing activities in the schools.
Likewise, DepEd Regional Directors and the schools division/city superintendent are also enjoined to extend full administrative support to this project.
In region IX, the project will be conducted in the following selected schools: Balangasan Elementary School, Pagadian City with PDA Chapter President Dr. Cyril Cartojano; Ipil Central School, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay with Dr. Mary Joyce Cabasag; Biasong Elementary School and Sto. Nino Elementary School with Dr. Glenda Oca and Baliwasan Central School with Dr. Joy Feliciano, PDA Chapter President. (NBE/CAL-PIA9 Zambo Sur)
