The Mindanao Tripartite Youth Core, youth desk of the Bishops - Ulama Conference, in coordination with SPS Dept. of Southern City Colleges has conducted the “Sining Kabataan para sa Kapayapaan: An on the Spot Poster Making Contest”, last Oct. 9, 2011 at Gymnasium, SCC, Zamboanga City. It was a simultaneous art activity for peace around different areas of Mindanao, to which the winning poster was hailed as the official poster for the Mindanao Week of Peace 2011.
A total of 25 schools, organizations and institution from Zamboanga City participated in the said event, and a total of 30 artists gathered to join and draw their entries the whole day. The artists’ ages range from 14 to 21 years old. They were oriented on the working concept which is actually parallel to the theme of the Mindanao Week of Peace 2011 “Common word between us and you: Love of God, Love of neighbor”.
The local judges have chosen ten top submitted posters to represent Zamboanga in Iligan for exposition. Together with all the other top ten entries from local community of Cagayan, Davao, Ozamis, Sibugay, Bukidnon, Butuan, Gensan, Oroquieta, Marawi, Surigao and Iligan, had been critiqued and judged again and chosen the top twenty posters which was sent to Bishops Ulama Conference office in Davao for final selection of the winning poster. The top twenty participants were notified for making it at the final selection phase. They were given peace and dialogue formations and had the chance to meet and greet the Bishops and Ulama of the Tripartite Commission in Davao City.
Among the hundreds of entries from different community and schools, the artists that topped them all was a 22 year old Zambogueno, Edmar Mahinay Nasi. Edmar is a Sama-Badjao born Aug. 18, 1989 at Labuan Zamboanga City. He is a student at Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College taking up Bachelor in Technical Teaching Education with scholarship grant under the NCIP. As a son of a fisherman, he shared his story on how his family struggles just to go on with his and his four siblings’ education.
In an interview Edmar, he said he’s winning entry is called “Voice of Peace, which means that the call for peace and dialogue is his life’s aspirations.” “The white dove represents the hands of God that embrace people from all walks of life, Muslims, Christians and other living faith.” He also emphasized that peace dwell on the rule of loving your neighbor and the love of GOD as shown in an embracing Muslim and Christian figure in his poster. The ray of light represents the diverse culture around Mindanao.
The strength of his art work, he said, was its ability to convey exactly its intended theme; its weakness is that it’s a very touching image.
He related that he came unprepared for the contest because he was informed just a day before the event. He wasn’t even able to bring any coloring materials so he ended up borrowing acrylic latex colors from his fellow contestant but was worried that he might not finish the art work for the materials handed over to him were just limited. Nonetheless, he managed to pull through, presented the poster just in time for judging, and even end up winning.
The official poster for MWOP. The winner of the poster making contest.
