The PNP is expanding its own nationwide plan to reforest the countryside with 10-million trees.
A Memorandum of Agreement is set to be formalized today (Monday, Jan 30) among the PNP and DENR to jumpstart the nationwide PNP-initiated greening project dubbed “Pulis Makakalikasan: Sampung Milyong Puno Pamana sa Kinabukasan.”
DENR Sec Ramon JP Paje and PNP Chief, Director General Nicanor A Bartolome will forge an agreement of mutual cooperation and support to this environmental initiative.
The ceremony highlights the commemoration of the PNP Founding Anniversary celebrated with a Flag-Raising, and Parade and Review ceremony with DILG Sec. Jesse M Robredo as guest of honor and speaker.
According to Bartolome, the 10-Million Trees for 7,000 Islands Project of the PNP is in support of the National Climate Change Action Plan of the Climate Change Commission.
"This noble endeavor also supports the National Greening Program of governmet that envisions to grow 1.5-billion trees in six years from 2011-2016," Bartolome said.
Under the expanded 10 Million Trees for 7,000 Islands Project, the 140,000-strong PNP is poised to embark on a nationwide individual commitment to plant six trees each month over the next 12 months.
Bartolome is confident the PNP will be able to surpass the 10-million target with the prticiption of families of police personnel, force multipliers, accredited NGOs, LGUs and citizen volunteers.
"This is a tall order--as tall as the trees we envision to grow," Bartolome said as he enjoined public support for the project.
PNP Spokesman, CSupt Agrimero Cruz Jr. said Police Regional Offices were instructed to identify idle government land for reforestation in coordination with DENR and LGUs.
"Each Regional and Provincial PNP Office were also instructed to put-up their own nurseries to propagate seedlings and saplings of both hardwood and fruit -bearing tree varieties." Cruz said.
To closely monitor progress of the reforestation effort, LGUs will certify actual project completion in their localities, Cruz explained.
