Zamboanga City (May 15, 2012) The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines – Zamboanga International Airport, Philippine Airlines (PAL), Cebu Pacific & AirPhil Express (CAAP) in collaboration with Regional Project Monitoring Committee (RPMC) IX Adhoc Committee and the Local Government of Zamboanga City launched the “Zamboanga International Airport Interior Design Contest” and after the launching, a press conference follows.
Engineer George G. Ledesma, Chairman, RPMC IX Ad Hoc Committee on the
ZIA Interior Design Contest presented the rationale and mechanics of the
Background / Rationale: There is a pending proposal for the New
Zamboanga international Airport (ZIA) to be transferred to a new
location in the barangays of Mercedes, Taluksangay and Talabaan. The
transfer, however, may not take effect in the short term, considering
the limited funding and vital requirements (i.e.., meeting the required
volume of passengers / cargoes) to justify the transfer; ZIA terminal is
also at the forefront of creating the first impression of the city
hence, the need to improve and upgrade the airport at the present
Recently, the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC)
implemented an improvement project of the airport particularly at the
pre-departure area. However, the Airport does not have a master plan or
blue print to guide future improvements and upgrading, particularly of
the interior sections of the terminal. It is in this context that a
contest to solicit interior design/plan for the airport conveying the
way of life of Zamboanguenos as a people and depicting the cultural
character of the city or the region is undertaken. The contest was
conceptualized during the Problem-Solving Session conducted by the
Regional Project Monitoring Committee (RPMC) IX last September 22, 2011
with concerned entities. The contest will be spearheaded by the Civil
Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) – ZIA, in collaboration
with other professionals from the College of Architecture of Western
Mindanao State University (WMSU), Department of Tourism (DOT) IX,
Zamboanga City Mayor’s Office/City Tourism Office and the three major
airlines: Philippine Air Lines, Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines Express
operating at the ZIA.
The contest is open only to all interested PRC Registered Architects and
other Interior Designers, residing in Zamboanga City and the nearby
provinces / cities.
Objectives / Purpose: The contest / activity aims to come up with a
master plan or blueprint of the airport terminal interior for
consideration by DOTC/CAAP in future improvement of the airport,
Specifically, the activity will focus on Portfolio of the Proposed
Interior Design of Check-in, Pre-departure, Mezzanine (with food court,
recreational business center, GAD area (breast feeding/toddler’s corner)
