MANILA Director Brando F. Merrera of the News and Information Bureau (NIB) under the Presidential Communications Operations Office died of heart failure on July 6. He was 50.
Born in Dagupan City, Pangasinan, on Dec. 23, 1961, Merrera finished his Bachelor of Science in Journalism degree from the University of Luzon (formerly Luzon Colleges) in Pangasinan in 1986.
He also studied law at the Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU) for two years (1986-1988) before joining the Philippines News Agency in 1989, where he rose quickly from reporter to senior news editor, managing editor and ultimately as head of the NIB, PNA's mother bureau.
A Career Executive Service Officer with the rank of CESO III, he obtained his Master's in Mass Communication from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in 1996.
He also served as an elective member of the Sangguniang Bayan of Binmaley, Pangasinan from 1980 to 1987.
Merrera is survived by daughter Darlynara, 14, and other members of the family.
His remains lie in state at the Ascension Chapel of the Arlington Memorial Chapels and Crematory along G. Araneta Ave., Quezon City.
