I am Hannah Villares, a junior student taking up BS Development Communication in the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). One of my subjects this semester is DEVC 123 (Management and Production of a Community Newspaper). One of the requirements of the said subject is a case study on one of the ten successful community newspapers of the Philippines. I was assigned by my professor to conduct a case study on your community newspaper, The Zamboanga Times.

I applied in this company so-called ESS Manufacturing Company, Inc. which holds its offices at the 41st, 42nd and 23rd floor of PBCOM Tower, Ayala Avenue, Makati, for the position of Legal researcher/legal indexer.
They called me to take their written exam. The next day they called me and they told me that I passed the written exam. Furthermore I have to pass their assessment (I don't have any idea on what's their procedure on this). Later they call me and told me that I passed and I was invited for an interview.
On the day of the interview, I was asked by this interviewer: Where did I took my Bachelor of Laws? I told her: from Western Mindanao State University. She replied: Pardon again? I repeated my answer. Then she blurted: Oh Mindanaooo... As if there's an expression of awe and surprise. I felt a bit insulted because I sense a negative connotation from the tone of her voice.
And they say that they would call within a week if ever they will decide to hire me.
I know that it is management prerogative to select and hire whom they want to be employed in the company. But as an applicant, we also have a right to be respected. Of our being human, because we have feelings, too. Emotions. We get hurt. We're not automatons or machines.
Also, as an emphasis, we have the right to be respected of our roots.
I wrote this letter as a full-blown protest because it is clear that I was not hired because of the word MINDANAO in my resume.
And as always, I will not be ashamed to be called a MINDANAOAN! I am a MINDANAOAN! and I will always be a MINDANAOAN!
People might say that I am overreacting and experiencing some sort of paranoia. No, I'm just offended by the way that certain intelligent interviewer uttered the word MINDANAO. As if there's an air of derision and disgust. As if such word MINDANAO will put my application into damnation. Into one of their shredding machines or trash cans.
If they are smart enough, they should have noticed the word MINDANAO in my resume before I was called to take their written exam. Also, why did I passed their assessment? I don't have any clue to how they do it. And later they would dumped my application because of the word MINDANAO. They should have had saved me from the expense of going back and forth from my residence in Ermita, Manila and to their place. I should not be experiencing asthmatic attacks right now brought by the stress of traveling and city pollution.
This goes to show that these Corporate Indios don't really know how to read. I used the word Indios on these Pathetics because I have Spanish/Mexican blood running in my veins. And I speak a Creole Spanish language called Chavacano. Now, that's throwing their trying hard Racist attitude back at them.
Also, I wrote this letter to warn other Mindanaoans that these trying hard Racist exists. And we as MINDANAOANS should stand up and fight for what we believe is right.
After passing all the requirements, tests, exams, assesments, etc. whatever, then Dumping your application in the end because you're a MINDANAOAN is tantamount to Economic Abuse, as defined by law and construed in a liberal and broader context.
This local racism phenomenon must be stopped!
I am also writing this on behalf of everyone who has experienced the same.

Regarding Chavacano and Mindanao: When my daughter Perlas Kintanar Lorenzo, M.D. regularly travelled around the world for two years she found out that her Chavacano was highly useful in communicating with people in Cuba, Texas, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Spain and many other places.
And Mindanao is a good starting point for discussion.

More if you do speak "CHAVACANO" when you go to South, Central and North America which USA is part of it, No UP or any other top Universiies in the Philippines can say they are better than you are because you can better communicate the Americans than any of them from Luzon.

The Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao was created by virtue of Republic Act 6734 in August 1, 1989 during the regime of President Corazon C. Aquino for the reason to meet the demands of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) who’s at that time fighting and demanding for the independence of Mindanao. Series of peace talk have been done between the MNLF and the GRP to end the unending conflict between both parties. However, the negotiation turned down; instead the Philippine government comes up with evil motive to grant Muslim Mindanaoans debris the autonomous region ignoring history that Mindanao have never been part of the Philippines which the MNLF are fighting for. The existence of the region was done through democratic process. Out of many cities and provinces of Mindanao only four provinces were in favor to be part of the ARMM. In fact, if there was a clear and honest conduct of plebiscite at that time, the whole constituents were not in favor thus, Tawi-Tawi shouldn’t have been included supposedly because they saw that the ARMM will not bring good to them and couldn’t addressed the problem of the whole Bangsa Moro people. To many, ARMM is bogus. Look, since it is inception, what happened to the condition of its constituents? Many of our people are continuously suffering due to the insufficient delivery of basic public services. No improvement on agriculture, fisheries, infrastructures, education, health services, peace and order, simply, because they have our Political Leaders have no concrete political agenda. The Autonomous Region should serve as a purpose for our local officials to pass laws towards the upliftment and welfare of our lives and benefits to our community. From the start, until today, it is an obvious observation that we are not moving forward. Our region lacks facilities and educational developments that need further access and modification despite billion of pesos poured down by the Malacanang for the purpose. Means of livelihood and job opportunities are in dire need. These are but just few of main concerns that our local leaders should act upon.
As election is fast approaching, we the ARMM citizens should reflect upon the past elections – those who won but didn’t serve. We are their constituents. They are our servants. Servants whom we have trusted the responsibility to show justification of the positions they have. Did they pass any single bill into law? Did they alleviate the sufferings of the poor? Did they make drastic moves to bring Government Examination to Tawi-Tawi for the benefits of our people? Or did they just conduct the National Anthem during the opening of their session in Regional Legislative Assembly (RLA)? Or did they just smoke all day long in their air-conditioned rooms? Or did they just put on their make-up and did nothing? Or they are not knowledgeable enough to pass laws? Were they not just enjoying the spotlight and proud to have dozens of bodyguards? Were they not just living in luxurious mansions? Were they not just thinking about their children, sending them into exclusive schools forgetting serving their people? If we are very much aware of the incompetence of our leaders, should we allow this shameful thing to happen over and over again?
In my observation, Public Office is no longer a Public Service but it is a Public Selfish, I say so because most of our political leaders competing with each other building expensive and colossal mansions and real estates; deluxe wheels; unnumbered guns and ammunitions; business outlets; bundles of cash deposit; and fully-embedded with jewelries. They are proud to be praised by their followers for possessing such wealth and disregarding the fact that conscious and concerned citizens are questioning their performances and their acquisition of wealth. It puzzles the people why the government doesn’t check the lifestyle and accomplishment of those political leaders. Indeed, ill-gotten wealth like this is just temporary for in a split of a second it will be gone by the wind. In the past, many corrupt leaders enjoying similar situation like Former President Saddam Hussein of Iraq, our past president Ferdinand Marcos, and many others whose end was in disgraceful death. Do you want to be ill-remembered like them? Did their power bring them honor? Remember if Former Iraq President Saddam Hussein was hanged, all corrupt leaders regardless of faith will be hanged by God in the Day of Judgment. Wake up before it’s too late. Our dear leaders, it is about time to change. Think of what you can do for your people, enough amassing public money and please be ashamed. Remember! Our doings can be seen by God. You still have chance to serve your constituents and do better. Why don’t you ask our National Leaders to make Zamboanga City, a center to serve the pilgrims by directing concerned Airliners to open an office here during the month of the Hadj to avoid too many expenses, hassle and so forth? And you can also put up tangible livelihood programs that cater the need of responsible beneficiaries. Why don’t you develop the skills of your people making them self-reliant? The problem of your people is not all money but it is a law you pass or make in the RLA for them to earn clean and decent income. The truth, there are many things you can do in the Regional Legislative Assembly for the welfare of your people. I am looking forward that our leaders in power can learn so that you can serve with utmost responsibility and integrity as provided in Philippine Constitution 1987 Article XI Section I that a public office is a public trust. I am earnestly praying that there is still a little conscience left in your soul.
It is about time to realize sending our representatives to the Regional Legislative Assembly who manifests sincerity and dedication. If we can’t choose such competent leaders at least we have to choose leaders that we can be proud of like DR. GEORGE R. LEE, ISMAEL “POCHONG” ABUBAKAR, and LATE ATTY. DERRY IBRAHIM (May his soul rest in peace) who showed their intelligent and brilliantness before their peers in RLA and have received great admiration in Cotabato City. Yes, it seems that everybody is running but we should be on the right track of choosing competent ones!
He is not that hungry for personal fame. He simply wanted to inform the public about the sad reality that Mindanaoans job applicants like him encounter in Metro Manila nowadays. And if you feel that you are the ones being offended, well, "bato bato sa langit, ang matamaan huwag magagalit". Or as my former Yakan teacher in history says, "bato bato sa langit, ang matamaan masaktan sana."
It's easy to pretend to be someone nowadays in the internet. It is easy to steal identities. But one for thing for sure, Fernan Soria or Soria Fernan or whatever his name is, is not apologizing to anyone for anything. Porque? Cosa ba el disuyu culpa? I find it very disturbing that after my siister who is a faculty of ZSCMST paid off the housing lot through the school representative Mrs. Flores of Zamboanga State College of Marine Schiences and Technology but it came out that not all payments were posted and instead of paid off my sister still owe a lot. Corruptions inside the school even among the teachers who victimized their own co-teachers.
Please, if you could help publicized more of thier corruption hoping that that straighten my sisters account not just ignoring her and giving her hard time.

And I cannot help expressing my opinion on these matters through your space "READERS' COMMENTS." As a result, I have been receiving varied reactions on my emails.
I have presented to you my opinions and those were my own. Regardless of what the beliefs of the readers are, I respect them. I will continue to express my opinions in the most careful manner possible, present facts as they are established and accepted by the people and defend them if necessary. I believe that the people can not be fooled all of the time. I believe the majority of us know how to distinguish between what is true or not and what is right or wrong.
Furthermore, I promise not to judge the opinion of others if they differ from mine, or neither tell them what to do if they do not agree with mine. The least I could do is to suggest, like for instance when one of your readers asked what to expect from the military in the event of a terrorist attack.

Those American soldiers walking around with guns and ammo add to our overpopulation problems, what more if their relatives come here illegally and are tolerated because they are the children and relatives of the military soldiers from America. Now that the government has disarmed the nation, those needing to protect their haciendas will have to use javelins, spears, bows and arrows, or the bolo knife to protect their properties and family. Those living in the CONCRETE JUNGLES with an adequate police force might NOT understand that. A sling shot using marbles would only give someone a headache. I like the crossbow used by William Tell a folk lore hero in Switzerland. No need to send our soldiers to the Middle East. Send them to the Southern Regions in Mindanao. Bacteria of illegitimacy: Arroyo infects the Court.
As a retired law professor of Far Eastern University (FEU), founding president of the Las Pinas City Bar Association (LPBA) and former vice president of the Pasay Paranaque Las Pinas Muntinlupa Chapter of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), may I respectfully state that the “Arroyo Supreme Court” is now about to be baptized as a leading political tool to perpetuate Pres. Gloria Arroyo in power beyond the end of her much-maligned and illegitimate term in June this year.
Abandoning the intent and spirit of decades-old Philippine jurisprudence, and voting 9-1-3, the Arroyo Court has ruled that Pres. Arroyo could appoint the next Chief Justice, notwithstanding the two-month appointment ban imposed by Article VII of the 1987 Constitution.
The Arroyo Court held that the appointment ban under Article VII of the Constitution which prohibits the President or Acting President from making appointments “two months immediately before the next presidential elections” to avoid prejudicing public service and endangering public safety did not apply to the Judiciary.
The Arroyo Court opined that the Judiciary is covered under Article VIII, which does not mention any appointment ban, and which specifically, under Section 9 thereof, gives the President “the authority to appoint, within 90 days, any member of the Judiciary based on the list which will be submitted by the Judicial and Bar Council.”
The fate of Philippine democracy now dangerously hangs in the balance.
The last bulwark of the rule of law in the Philippines has been infected and contaminated by the cancerous and rotten political influence of the power-conscious Palace, aggravated by the lack of wisdom of the members of the Arroyo Court itself, thus destroying whatever remaining semblance of independence and nobility that the Philippine Judiciary precariously enjoys.
I anticipate very vehement, aggressive and angry reactions from all sectors of Philippine society even after the inauguration of the next Philippine president in June this year (barring a failure of election or a repeat of martial-law rule).
Whoever would be appointed as the next Chief Justice by Pres. Arroyo during the appointment-ban period would surely be exposed, among other things, to impeachment proceedings before the next Congress which is expected to be controlled by the Opposition as a sign of angry protest of the Filipinos against the dreadful and corrupt 9-year Arroyo rule.
I am so sorry for and downhearted by the present sins and shortsightedness of Pres. Arroyo and the Arroyo Supreme Court.
Pres. Arroyo has infected and contaminated the Philippine Judiciary with the very same destructive and shameful bacteria of illegitimacy that has tainted and corrupted her despicable rule and has inflicted pain, suffering and agony on the Filipino people these past nine years.
May God have mercy on the Republic of the Philippines!

This is to commend The Daily Zamboanga times for its focus on health news. Especially nowadays when school is about to open. Our children needs to be kept healthy and fit.
Their eyes, ears, nose and throat must be ready to take in the information and nutrition to prepare them for a fruitful life.
They should be able to see what the teachers are writing on the blackboard.
They should be able to hear what the teachers are lecturing.
They should be able to breath to keep them alive and actrive.
They should be able to take in their food so they will stay healthy so the mouse and throat should be free from obstruction.

Someone named jennie therein commented that, that was as per police blatter. Ok then given that situation, isn't it better for you guys i your line of business to have things first clarified before publishing? I mean, it is not appropriate to rely much on the Police's Spot Reports specially in the cases like this where the Police were the main involved. My concern has nothing to do with any of the above issues being discussed. I came to you to ask for help. I am residing here in Illinois and all along I have been searching by asking and writing letters searching for my mom's biological parents. She was adopted by Pilar Vicente who is originally from Zamboanga and relocated in Davo City. My mom said she has heard the name Ebol, Dolores as maybe her mom. Perhaps the census in Zamboanga may have some answer to this.
I would appreciate any help you may offer.

Can anybody write a column that is purely chavacano so that we would learn how to use it? or better still, publish something that translates english or tagalog words to chavacano.
I just find this language very beautiful and therefore must be preserved. It speaks of our cultural heritage.
Probably, the locals there can promote the use of the language by writing signs, announcements or posters of dual language instead of english. It would make people feel they are in a different country - which would probably boost tourism because it would not just be like any other city in the Philippines.
