MANILA The Commission on Elections (Comelec) wants the postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls scheduled in October 2013 to 2014.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. said the reason they want the polls be conducted in 2014 is the proximity to the May 2013 midterm elections.
Im for the postponement of the Barangay election for October 2013, but I suggest it should be in 2014, not 2015, he said.
The Senate Committee on Local Government had earlier approved the bill seeking to fix a five-year term of office for Barangay and SK officials instead of their current three-year term.
Senate Bill No. 3296, introduced by Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., also calls for the extension of the term of Barangay and SK officials elected during the Oct. 25, 2010 polls up to Nov. 30, 2015.
Likewise, the bill seeks the said polls to be held instead on the last Monday of October 2015 and every five years thereafter.
However, Brillantes proposes that if the Barangay and SK elections will be held in 2015, it should be held earlier and not October.
It has to be October of 2014 or early 2015. It should not be close to the May 2016 elections, he said.
The poll body chief added that if the Barangay and SK polls will be held months after the midterm elections, they will have a hard time in the preparations.
We will also be having difficulties since we should have double preparations under that setup. Remember that we dont want the October 2013 elections since it is just five months after the May elections, Brillantes stressed. (PNA)
