District 1 Congresswoman Beng Climaco requested Transportation and Communication Secretary Leandro Mendoza the immediate implementation and release of P214 Million allotted for the repair of the Zamboanga International Airport since 2007.
Climaco, a member of the powerful House Committee on Appropriations, reiterated that a budget of P64 million was allotted in the 2007 budget for runway repair. Another P110 million fund is in place for runway repair in the 2008 budget, and another item worth P23 million and P17 million for the airport and navigational facilities are in the 2008 Budget.
As a result of Climaco’s consistent lobbying with President Arroyo to allot funding for the airport rehabilitation, the President included it as one of her priorities in this year’s State of the Nation Address.
The Zamboanga Airport, being the gateway to Asia’s Latin City, is a vital area for all these improvements.
Airport officials have brought to Climaco’s attention about the delay encountered in the release of funds for the improvement of the facilities at the airport despite the budget allocation.
Just recently, the airport’s conveyor has been repaired, a project which resulted from the consistent lobbying by the District 1 lady solon.
